MARTINA CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL
Sustainability Policy
Martina Children’s Hospital’s policy for sustainable development
The overall goal of Martina Children’s Hospital is to provide somatic and mental health care where the child’s needs are always at the center. Our aim is for children and families to feel respected, involved, comfortable, and safe through our staff’s approach and competence. The operational goal is to reduce somatic and psychological suffering and increase the quality of life for our patients from newborn to adulthood. For Martina Children’s Hospital, sustainability work is an important part of daily operations and involves working with both quality and environmental issues. To provide the best possible care with minimal environmental impact, the management team has decided to consider the UN’s global sustainability goals formulated in Agenda 2030 in all business development. Our focus areas are goal 3 (health and well-being), 5 (gender equality), and 12 (responsible consumption and production), as well as the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which became law on January 1, 2020. The management team’s objective is to apply trust-based leadership by working both short and long-term. The goals and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child provide us with good conditions to contribute to sustainable development for the future.
Martina Children’s Hospital’s organization is characterized by six core values. This applies to both the daily healthcare work and the overall operational and strategic goals that are made at management level.
Competence:
Staff who treat children must have such education and competence that they can best manage the somatic and mental needs of children and families. Our staff offers the best possible care based on national guidelines and the research available in various fields. We strive to prevent ill health in children and be responsive to the child’s signals. Our staff continuously educates themselves by participating in courses and national and international congresses in various fields. Internally, we continuously train staff through lectures, practical exercises and the development of guidelines and PMs.
Commitment:
Children and their families are treated with respect, understanding, and integrity. We encourage children to live healthy lives with plenty of physical activity. As part of this, we have a Center for Weight Management. We also work externally with a successful annual event since 2016; the Martina Run. This is a race where families with both healthy and sick children participate together at Stockholm Stadium, each according to their individual capabilities.
Teamwork:
Both management and staff collaborate to provide the best possible health care for children. Martina Children’s Hospital has several different departments and most specialists and subspecialists in outpatient care. By having the various departments and specialists gathered in one place, it facilitates the care chain around patients’ needs and thus promotes the principle of proximity and continuity. Our goal is to identify illness and risk factors as early as in our child health center to increase quality of life.
Accessibility:
Martina Children’s Hospital’s goal is to always be available for children and families and that it should be easy to contact us both physically and by telephone. Martina’s members can book urgent appointments via the website and also search at our emergency department as a drop-in, even on evenings and weekends during our opening hours. Nurse visits can be booked via 1177.
Sustainability:
We conduct continuous work regarding the environmental impact of our operations. As an example, in our appointment notifications, we encourage patients to use public transport instead of cars. Environmental aspects are considered when purchasing consumables and equipment. In close cooperation with Sophiahemmet, we continuously work to become even more climate and resource-efficient. Martina Children’s Hospital was environmentally certified in 2017.
Child perspective:
Children and parents should receive information about illness, treatment and care in an understandable way. Premises and working methods are adapted based on a child and youth perspective. Our goal is to create security for the families who visit us. We strive to ensure that children have continuity regarding healthcare staff as far as possible. Since January 1, 2020, we have implemented the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in our work.
How do we achieve our six core values?
We work according to national guidelines and ensure this through internal training and by participating in both national and international meetings. Martina has an established system for incident reporting. We strive for trust-based leadership and encourage management, employees, patients, and other stakeholders to suggest improvements that should be openly discussed in various forums. We have transparency regarding our internal goals and how we succeed in achieving them. Martina Children’s Hospital has measurable and visible environmental goals that drive sustainable development forward.
